Peer to peer reviews provide valuable feedback, not only to the individual but also those whom manage them. Creating the right rubric, and more importantly its weighting is key to accomplishing this.
Problem
With rubrics, its possible to weight a particular category more than another. Allow users to set this weighting in relation to the other categories.
Multiple sliders could provide a way to weight categories
Discovery
It was important to not only give the user the option to set each weight of category but to also show it in comparison to the other categories of the rubric.
We looked at several options, including the ability to manually input the weight on category creation, however this didn’t satisfy the importance of showing the relation to the other categories.
Rather than resorting to a simple input field when showing each of the categories we opted for a combined slider, allowing a user to adjust and see in realtime the affect it would have on the weighting of the other categories.
Category slider
With the idea of a combined slider, that shows all categories and their relation to each other, creating the wireframes began.
The most important information to consider would be the % number that each of the categories were weighted for. So this was show as the primary piece of information, next would be the category name. And the last, which has yet to be mentioned were the settings for each category.
Sub-settings for each of the categories
Category Settings
Weighting wasn’t the only issue that needed to be addressed within the weighting of the categories. In fact the categories themselves needed some tertiary options that the user could select, they are as follows;
Measurement, either as a range, or binary option.
If a range, the min/max range of the score.
A less than option.
An option to mark us non-applicable.
With these in mind, I needed to create a “settings” section that the users could access within each category.
Final Design
Given that this was a new way of weighting categories, one that could have been done via a simple input. It was important for us to provide plenty of feedback and instruction to the users. You may also notice that rather than having the settings being part of the category section, we opted to break it out, allowing us to utilise a set size for each of the settings boxes.
